History of Pokemon

The Pokemon franchise started in 1996 with the creation of the “Pokemon Red and Green” games. These games introduced the concept of capturing and training creatures known as Pokémon, setting the stage for a cultural phenomenon. The franchise quickly expanded by creating over 60 games, an animated TV series, 23 films, a trading card game, a manga series, and various merchandise, becoming a global sensation. In 1998, they released Pokémon Yellow, featuring the iconic Pikachu, further solidified the franchise's popularity. In the following years, Pokémon continued to evolve with new game generations, including titles for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and 3DS (UHCL The Signal).

The mobile era brought unprecedented success with the launch of Pokémon GO in 2016, an augmented reality game that encouraged real-world exploration. Pokemon Go was developed by Niantic Labs in San Francisco and was an instant success upon its release in 2016. Apple has revealed that the app has had more downloads in the first week than ever before in history, the game profits are as much as $6 million dollars a day, and 1 in every 10 Americans played it daily (ChatGPT).

 

Most recently in 2019, the franchise then made its way to the Nintendo Switch with Pokémon Sword and Shield. This marking the 8th generation, Pokémon remains a cultural powerhouse, expanding into collaborations, online gaming, and maintaining its appeal across various forms of media (UHCL The Signal).

On July 6, 2016, Pokémon GO was officially released, marking a groundbreaking moment in mobile gaming. Developed by Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, the game quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Combining augmented reality with the beloved Pokémon franchise, Pokémon GO allowed players to explore the real world, capturing virtual Pokémon using their smartphones (ChatGPT).

Within days of its release, Pokémon GO became a global sensation. Parks, landmarks, and city streets were filled with enthusiastic players, collectively known as trainers, in search of Pokémon. Sustained Popularity and Cultural Impact

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, Pokémon GO continues to thrive, maintaining its status as one of the most popular mobile games globally. Its success lies not only in the innovative use of technology but also in its ability to create a sense of adventure, exploration, and community, making it a lasting and influential force in the world of gaming (ChatGPT).

Current Conversations

Pokemon Go forever changed the world by making our neighborhoods a Pokemon playground. Children became obsessed with the industry in the 1990s and 2000s and trained to become Pokemon masters. When the Pokemon Go game dropped, the power of nostalgia fueled a large amount of hype for the game and allowed millennials to continue their adventure but in a different way.

 

While at its peak at the game release, Pokemon Go had over 250 million players per month, but by December 2016 users had decreased to 50 million. Since this initial crash, the user base has been steadily growing again each year as players return and Niantic adds new features to improve the gamer experience (Business of Apps, 2023).

 

Overall, many players were dissatisfied with the initial Pokemon Go experience, but Niantic has made a lot of improvements over the last seven years, and especially with the Covid pandemic. Users have been willing to give the app another try, ultimately leading the growth in community size.
